Significance

A mysterious force that affects a variety of magical techniques and events. It is essentially determined by 'importance'. A location where something of importance happened is likely to be better fuel for a ley line, for example, and likewise an important event occurring will likely result in strange magical effects.

It is entirely possible that significance is heavily tied into quantum theory - the idea that things are as they are because we observe them to be so. 'Importance' is a heavily subjective term, as it is usually defined by what has observed such a thing, or how many people know about it, and what they think. Ideas that support this include the prospect of a small rift having few to no observers, lending to its low significance level, whilst a large one garners a rather large amount of attention, thus growing its 'significance'.

An example of an SMS during Asylum experiments

An SMS, as it is often shorthanded to, is the reaction that occurs when a beta particle attaches to a newly formed mana particle. The transfer of a physical particle to one connected to other planes of existence creates a spark of energy as a connection between the physical world and the spectral planes is created.

This spark releases spectral energy into the world that destabilises physical particles, leading to more electrons becoming detached and finding their way to more mana particles coming through the new connection between planes. This becomes an explosive chain reaction that continues to grow, and creates a stronger link between the physical and metaphysical realms.

One example of the results of this effect is a Beta Leyline Nova.

Planar Gravity

Gravity tends to follow the rule of 'the bigger and more dense it is, the more things are pulled towards it'. This rule applies to planes, as well, in that energy from the lesser planes of existence finds itself pulled towards the larger ones. This theory is the basis for the idea that Ephemeral Planes are brand new ones whose energy is quickly absorbed by larger ones, leading to their incredibly short lifespans.

The planes known as 'Heaven' and 'Hell' are widely known to be incredibly large, and are often where souls are pulled toward.
